Pool facts and questions: Can I watch the dogs swimming on a webcam? - Yes, Pool Cam Will my curly coated dog lookOK after a swim? - Curly coats especially the "Doodles" coats tend to repel water...they are great water dogs! Other than a few more waves and curls, our curly coated friends should do well. Will my dog get cold after the swim. Where will he go after he swims? - Dogs will receive a warm water rinse after the swim and then be towel dried. If it is a warm day and his size group is playing, your dog will go outside to dry naturally. When winter comes he will not be allowed outside until dry. In the meantime he will be in a daycare kennel or with his group on the playfloor. All dogs swimming will go to potty before the swim, so they should be fine for quite awhile after they swim. Is swimming OK for my older dog? - Swimming is great for older dogs because it is a non-weight baring activity. My vet thinks hydrotherapy would be good for my dog. Is time available for one-on-one time with the canine rehabilitation specialist? - We intend to send a letter out to vets letting them know we have a pool and that time is available for theraputic swims. For specific therapy a certified canine physical therapist should accompany the dog. If it is just a matter of getting the dog to swim laps, one of our staff members can help. Please call for details. Certain breeds love the water but sink like rocks! Can they swim? - We are well prepared for our water loving non-swimmers. Canine life jackets are already at the kennel for those dogs who want to be in the water, but just can't get the hang of it, or are natural "sinkers" because of their breed (bulldogs are an example.) We can also teach your dog to swim using some interesting techniques. The pool time seems expensive in relationship to what I already pay for daycare. Why? - We have entertained the idea of a dog pool for a long time and have done research on canine swimming facilities all over the country. We are well within the usual price point for this service. Our pool, dock, and dividing wall are expensive to purchase, and the chemicals to keep our pool sparkling clean are expensive as well. Water and electricity to run our super tough pump are also costly. There is also the cost of toys, life jackets, etc. for the pool that are necessary for your dog's positive swimming experience. The most costly of all are our people. Group swims (4-5 dogs) will have their own human swim buddy (compared to 1 buddy per 15 on land.) We also pay to insure that our staff is trained in canine CPR and water safety. Do we ever think we'll need those skills? No, but Lucky Dog takes no chances with your special dog; our groups will be managably small, but still closely observed by a human friend. One half hour seems a little short. Will hourly sessions be available? - This is one tough 1/2 hour work out! The dogs will be stimulated to swim and play with lots of toys, tennis balls, and human interaction. 1/2 hour, especially in the beginning is plenty and one tired dog will come out of the session! Eventually, as things fall into place, we will examine the possibility of hour long sessions. Did you know that 15 minutes of swimming is the same amount of exercise your dog gets in a 1 hour walk? Swimming is easy on the skeletal system; great for overweight dogs! *As our pool groups grow, sessions may be added and prices adjusted depending upon demand. |
